EPS Calculator formula

EPS = (Net income − Preferred dividends) ÷ Weighted average ordinary shares.

Basic earnings per share allocates profit available to ordinary shareholders across the weighted-average ordinary shares outstanding during the reporting period.

How to interpret the result

EPS can support comparisons across periods, but it should be read with the company accounts because buybacks, dilution and exceptional items can change it.

Worked example

Net income of one million across 500,000 shares gives EPS of 2 when there are no preferred dividends.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter values from the same transaction or scenario.
  2. Confirm that quantities, dates, rates and currency match the labels.
  3. Review the result and change one assumption at a time when comparing scenarios.

Common mistakes

  • Using the closing share count instead of a weighted-average count.
  • Failing to subtract preferred dividends.
  • Confusing basic EPS with diluted EPS.

Limitations

This simplified calculator does not calculate diluted EPS, adjust exceptional items or validate the accounting definitions used in company filings.
